PSAT Test
The PSAT/NMSQT serves two purposes.
First, "PSAT" stands for "Preliminary SAT." In other words, it is a practice test to help students prepare for the SAT. The PSAT is similar to the SAT, with some differences: the PSAT is shorter; has a slightly lower level of difficulty; does not include a timed essay; and is not required by any colleges in the admission process.
Second, "NMSQT" stands for "National Merit Scholar Qualifying Test." High-scoring students can receive recognition and compete for merit scholarships. For more information on the National Merit Scholar program, visit www.NationalMerit.org.
The PSAT/NMSQT is offered every October, either on the third Saturday of October or the Wednesday before. Since testing dates, fees, and sign-up procedures vary by school, contact your school counseling staff or administration in advance to find out the details.
To prepare, check out College Board's prep materials or prep books such as PSAT/NMSQT 2008 or Cracking the PSAT/NMSQT
