College Admissions Secrets -- Extracurriculars

Extracurriculars

One way to shine is through your extracurricular activities, your involvements outside of the classroom.

What Makes a "Good" Extracurricular Activity

A good extracurricular is one in which you can show a combination of the following attributes:

  • Commitment. Do you dedicate hours, not minutes? Have you stuck with it for years, not weeks? Show colleges that your interests are enduring; emphasize depth rather than wracking up variety just for the sake of padding your resume.
  • Leadership and initiative. Have you led a club, started a program, gotten a promotion, or taken on extra responsibilities? Show colleges that you like to make things happen.
  • Recognition. Have you earned awards like Employee of the Month, MVP, or Honorable Mention? Show colleges that your talent and dedication are remarkable.

Extracurriculars are Everywhere

You do not have to be a varsity athlete or president of the student council to have "extracurricular activities." All of your involvements can communicate something about your personality, character, passion, and abilities.

  • Sports
  • Music
  • Art
  • Dance
  • Drama
  • Volunteering
  • Internships
  • Jobs
  • On-campus clubs
  • Religious groups
  • Other organizations (scouts, 4-H, etc.)
  • Independent projects
  • Etc.

Also note that extracurriculars don't have to be associated with established organizations or clubs. Read this excellent article, "Six ways to turn your interests into extracurricular activities," for some great, outside-the-box ideas.
